Eel ("Ål") Overview

Eel - Anguilla anguilla

The eel has a snake-like shape with slimy skin and very small scales. The skin is gray-brown and lighter on the abdomen.
It is interesting that the eel can actually walk on land and orient itself to the nearest water.

Population

It plays and dies in the Sargasso Sea.

It becomes sexually mature at the age of 12-18, then it migrates to the Sargasso Sea and spawns, and then returns to Sweden.

It usually lives in salt water, in fresh water only females live (except Kalmarsund).

Size and growth

The eel is acutely endangered due to a dramatic reduction in the stock. According to some estimates, the stock is down to 1% of that in the 1970s.

The eel can be very old, there are facts that the eel can be almost 90 years old.

The eel female can be 1.50 m long, the male a maximum of 51 cm.

Record size

Swedish record: 3.2 Kg.
