
Solgen is a well-known fishing lake and has a good population of mainly zander, pike and perch. There are also tench, bream, roach, rudd, rudd, blubber and crayfish. The Mellby fishing license area consists of fishing waters belonging to 10 landowners in Mellby, the western part of Solgen. Solgen consists of several fishing license areas, the others are Eksjö fishing club (via Ifiske), Skälsnäs and Sandshult. The area is part of Solgens fishing conservation area association (FVOF) which represents a total of about 65 landowners around the lake, the chairman of Solgens FVOF is Gunnar Thorn-Andersen, Sandshult. At Mellby bathing area there is a wind shelter, TC, canoe rest area and Solgens boat club.
Solgen is part of the Emån river basin, and is located in Eksjö municipality on the Småland Highlands. Solgen is a moderately nutrient-rich lake with an area of 22 square kilometers and a maximum depth of 20 meters, the average depth is 5.4 m, located 195 meters above sea level. The surroundings around Solgen are dominated by mixed forest and agricultural land with pastures and fields. Solgen is designated as a valuable water for nature and for fishing. Around the lake there is a rich bird life, including lesser woodpeckers, lesser flycatchers, great falcons, larkspurs, white-tailed eagles and ospreys. There is also a permanent population of otters. There is a bird tower in Söraby and a nice hiking trail runs along the Solgenån from Värne to the bird tower. There are three nature reserves in Solgen, which protect large parts of the lake and its islands with a rich flora and fauna. Mellby fishing license area consists of fishing waters owned by 10 landowners with fishing waters in the western part of Solgen and around Mellby. The fishing waters are part of Solgen's fishing conservation area association. Solgen consists of three additional fishing license areas (Eksjö fishing club, Sandshult and Skälsnäs).
