Ljungan is a relatively large river with periodically high water flows, so when it comes to recommended fishing times, remember that the water flow plays a big role.
The first sea trout usually come up in Ljungan at the turn of July-August. Warm and dry summers a little later, cold and wet summers a little earlier. The first trout are often large, fish of 4-5 kg are not uncommon in August. In September, sea trout rise to 0.5-1 kg. During the autumn, larger trout also come up the river.
The spawning fish are of course brown, but a lot of shiny gallfish rise and that is what bites the best. There are also a lot of shiny fish during November and December. The best time for fishing is from mid-September to the end of November. From October 15 to November 15, fishing is protected due to the spawning of salmon and sea trout.
In March, the winter sturgeons become more active and the fishing becomes better, now you often get big fish. The fish are brown, but since the sea trout eat all winter, the fish are in good condition. April is also a good month for fishing for the winter sturgeons.
The snow melt usually starts around the turn of April-May and when the water flow increases, some shiny fish appear in the river. It is rare for any large fish to be caught at this time, the largest weigh up to 2 kg. When the water starts to recede at the end of May, you can have really good fishing for smaller shiny fish. At high tide, a lot of larger fish of 3-6 kg are caught.
Fishing for salmon is allowed again.
Grayling fishing is usually good from mid-June until the cold makes the fish less active. Autumn fishing in September/October in particular can be very good. Whitefish appear in the river in August and fishing can be carried out well into the spring winter.
Welcome to Nedre Ljungan!
