Free hand gear fishing

Hand gear fishing is free throughout Storsjön. Hand gear means a rod, jig or similar gear equipped with a line and a maximum of 10 hooks. Within individual waters, hand gear fishing from land and from anchored boats, as well as from ice in winter, is free.

Public and private water
------------------------
Storsjön consists partly of public water (the so-called Storsjöflaket), where the public has relatively far-reaching free fishing rights by law, and partly of private water, the latter divided into four fisheries management areas (Storsjön-Östersunds, Storsjön-Krokoms, StorsjönÅres and Storsjön-Bergs fvo).

Fishing license
------------------------
For fishing that is not covered by the free hand gear fishing, a fishing license must be purchased. A joint fishing license for all of Storsjön's fishery management areas can be purchased. Prices: 70 SEK/day, 200 SEK/week, 600 SEK/year. For fishing rights holders within their own fishing area 50 SEK/year and for the entire lake 250 SEK/year.

When fishing with a fishing license on private waters and when fishing on public waters, common gear regulations apply.

It is permitted to fish with:

• Down otters, drag otters, trolling and drag rowing with a maximum of 10 lures per boat.
• A maximum of 180 meters of bottom-set nets with a maximum depth of three meters.
• A bottom-set longline with a maximum of 100 hooks. The hooks must not be floating.
• A maximum of six Russians or cages. (Cages also include vats, troughs and similar equipment).
• Maximum 10 stand hooks.

Other general rules

• In Storsjön, there is a fishing ban during the periods May 15–June 15 and December 1–December 31.
• The minimum size for trout is 45 cm. Trout caught under the minimum size must be released.
• Outstanding equipment must be marked with the owner's name and address or property designation.
• There is a fishing ban in all streams containing grayling during the period April 15-June 1.

All crayfish fishing is prohibited throughout Storsjön.

Special rules within each fishery management area
------------------------

Storsjön-Åre

• A catch restriction of trout through trolling or drag fishing to a maximum of two fish per day will apply from the ice breaking up until June 15th between Brastabron and Hallen in an imaginary line between Hallen steamboat pier and Hammarnäs steamboat pier.
• Fishing rights holders on their own land parcels within the relevant area are exempt from the restriction.

Storsjön-Berg:

• All fishing is prohibited in the entire Billstaån River and within a radius of 300 meters from the outermost tip of the harbor pier outside the mouth of Billstaån River. All net fishing is prohibited within a radius of 300 m from the outermost tip of the harbor pier outside the mouth of Billstaån River and south of a line from the cottages about 500 m north of Capri to the old timber yard in Galhammar. See map point 2.
• All net fishing is prohibited outside all stream outlets within a radius of 200 m during the periods April 15 - June 15 and September 1 - October 31.

Storsjön-Krokom and Storsjön-Östersund:

• All net fishing is prohibited within an area limited by a line from the waterworks in Minnesgärde – Vallsundsbron's connection to Frösön and a line from Östersem via a line over Kycklingholmen to Frösön. See map point 1.

Storsjön-Östersund:

• All net fishing is prohibited within a radius of 200 m from the mouth of Odensalabäcken and the mouth of Vålbacksån. See map points 3 and 4.
• All net fishing is prohibited outside all stream outlets within a radius of 200 m during the period April 15 - June 15 and September 1 - October 31.

In tributaries to Storsjön, the following also applies:

• Prohibition on trout fishing during the period September 1 - October 31 in all inflowing waters up to the first definitive migration barrier.

• All fishing is prohibited year-round in Semsån and Odensalabäcken as well as in all streams within Storsjön-Bergs fvo.

A printed fishing license must be carried while fishing and can be shown to supervisory personnel upon request.

The fisherman is obliged to inform himself about the current regulations that apply in the respective area.

Other:

Where fishing occurs that deviates from the regulations of the respective fisheries management area, the fisheries management area or its representative has the right to charge a control fee. The fee may vary depending on the violation, but a maximum of 10% of the applicable price base amount.
