Kärnsjön is one of the largest and deepest lakes in Bohuslän. The surface area is 716 ha with a depth of 40 m. Kärnsjön's considerable length of 10 km in combination with its narrow width and steep shores gives it a fjord-like appearance. The area is part of the Örekilsälven Natura 2000 area with rich bird life with Peregrine Falcon and Fiskluse etc. Örekilsälven, which has a good supply of salmon and trout, flows through Kärnsjön and empties into the Gullmarsfjorden at Saltkällan. The lake has good swimming and fishing opportunities, as well as the opportunity to hike around the lake.
