In Långå there is a centuries-old tradition of understanding and using fishing as an asset of a natural resource worth protecting. It is the very core of what is the fishing culture in Långå and explains why Långå is appreciated for its harmonious balance of quality of life and quality of nature.
Långå fiskevårdsområdes förening is responsible for ensuring that Långåfisket is one of the most appreciated sport fishing areas. With knowledge, methods and measures, that goal will be met and renewed. Income from the fishing license goes back to the fisherman through fishery conservation and investments.
The fishery conservation plan applies primarily to the fishermen and their living conditions, but also to those who fish and their needs! Fishing culture is one of the quality concepts. The fishery conservation plan focuses on three key words:
Preserve
Only original and local species of trout, char, grayling, whitefish, pike and perch. Exceptions for two P&T waters. Current rules, requirements and principles support and secure the conservation interest. Regular monitoring and follow-up of the viability of fish stocks is carried out.
Care
Biotopes must be cared for and function in as natural and original a condition as possible and reasonable. The waters must be kept free of alien fish species. The reproductive capacity of fish stocks is checked and, if necessary, assisted breeding for release into certain waters takes place. Collaboration takes place with stakeholders and suppliers who meet special requirements. Extensive investments are made in biotope conservation measures, where the Långåljusnan project is the largest investment, which means that most of the river's natural values after flotation and power expansion have been recreated despite lower water flow.
Use
Fishing is based on good judgment and ethics. The fish you need for the day, say 3 fish, are kept. The rest are returned unharmed for the next opportunity. The fishing waters are made available and made available for sport fishing through a fishing license.
Rules, instructions and recommendations are available regarding conditions, fees, fishing methods and withdrawals. Advice and control are arranged through organised fishing supervision with trained supervisors appointed by the County Administrative Board. The fishing pressure is spread within the area to reduce the risk of certain areas being overfished.
Fishing for children
Children and young people fish for free up to and including the year they turn sixteen. In Långå there is a special pond, Djuptjärn, intended only for children up to 12 years of age. Life jackets and the company of an adult are conditions and a maximum of two trout per day.
Långåfisket's big four
Trout, char, grayling and whitefish are called Långåfisket's big four – the big four. All are original and popular sport fish. It is unique that in some places you can meet all four. Fishing for game fish is a special and great experience. This applies to everything from small brook trout to trout over 8 kilos (Långå-Ljusnan June 2015).
The Grundsjö trout is a large trout, related to the Vättern trout, and came a little later than the mountain trout.
The Grundsjö project works to create conditions for the trout for all future generations. The project is supported by Fortum Generation AB, the County Administrative Board, Härjedalen Municipality, Långå FVOF and Särvsjön Community Association.
Grayling is Härjedalen's national fish and is highly valued. "Ljusnan and Långåfisket are for whitefish fly fishermen what Emån is for sea trout fishermen_"_ wrote Lasse Hallberg, in FiN no. 2/2013. The quote speaks for itself. The circles in Långåfisket's logo symbolize "the big four".
Perch & Pike
Perch fishing is the beginning of a lifelong interest in fishing and is popular all year round, as is pike fishing, which has increased significantly. Perch is found in many of the waters and special measures are planned to increase the availability of perch in certain waters. In several of the waters there are very large perch. Weights around 2 kilos are not uncommon where the winning fish in the Härjedalen Fishing League 2019 was caught by Håkan Selin at just over 1.8 kg.
The pike is of good quality and is increasingly appreciated as a sport fish. In Långå-Ljusnan with its sel and lakes there is interesting and exciting pike fishing. The largest pike recorded in 2019 weighed just over 10 kilos.
Fishing waters
The fishing waters are privately owned. All are included in the fisheries management area. The clean and fresh waters found in Långå mean that the fish are of good quality. Measured heavy metals are well below the limit values. Långåljusnan is called the lifeblood of Långå fishing, Grundsjön is its inland sea, the ponds lie like silvery mirrors in the landscape and Långå village is the pearl of the adventure country. More of the rivers and many ponds would welcome more fishermen than today. There are places where you can be alone and not meet other fishermen.
Most fishing spots are easily accessible. Others are reached after a shorter hike. There are signposts, around 30 windbreaks, many rest areas, dry toilets, rental boats, launching ramps and places for the disabled.
The fly fishing license is also valid for fishing in all other waters.
Those who do not fish
There may be a day when you want to do something other than fishing. And those who accompany you want other activities. Enjoy the surroundings. Safari in nature, in the cultural landscape and to places worth visiting. Långå Skans is a fortification that was built after the peace of Brömsebro in 1645. Mushrooms and berries when in season. Several golf courses. Several ski resorts. Close to Hede and Vemdalen, the Funäsdal area and Norway to the west. The website has tips on places worth visiting and excursions to interesting areas.
Långå fiskevårdsområdes förening is responsible for granting fishing waters, fishing and biotope care, service, services and development. The association is owned by fishing rights owners in the village of Långå (Härjedalen) and covers an area of five square miles. The income is reinvested. The goal is to continue to be able to compare with the leading fisheries management areas in Sweden in the future.
