The fisheries management area consists of just over 400 fishing rights holders.
The fisheries management area's task is to manage fishing in the Byskeälven within the parishes of Byske and Jörn, Skellefteå municipality, Västerbotten county. The fisheries management area covers not only waters linked to fishing rights holders regarding the river/river valley but also in the sea. Regarding the sea, the following according to the statutes: "In the sea within the Byske parcel of land and within Furuskogen 2:1, the fisheries management area is delimited by the border with public water".
The association shall grant fishing within the fisheries management area by selling fishing licenses to the public. Decisions on granting may not conflict with Section 8 of the Fisheries Management Areas Act. The more detailed conditions are decided annually at the regular fisheries meeting.
When the Byskeälven fisheries management area, the Västerbotten part, was formed at the end of December 1989, this was a historic moment for fishing in this river. The fisheries management area became the largest of its kind in the country. The area extends from well beyond the mouth of the Byske River in Byskefjärden in the Gulf of Bothnia to the border with Norrbotten County - a stretch of river of ten kilometers with double banks.
The formation of this large fishing area gives the public the opportunity to fish along this entire stretch in exchange for a single fishing license.
