Hummeln has an area of 540 ha and is located in the Virån water system.
It is a very deep lake formed by a meteorite impact. The average depth is 13.3 m with a maximum depth of 61.5 m. The lake is known for large pikes and perch that often go pelagic. The lake has 17 different species of fish, of which the pike perch is the most important species as a forage fish for pike and zander.
