Boren is located at the crossroads between the Östgötland plains in the south and the forested areas in the north. The lake is mainly home to large pike and perch. The lake system also contains the red-listed fish species asp. In recent years, rainbow salmon and salmon trout have also been planted, but these species do not seem to reproduce in the lake.
The lake is estimated to produce 15-20 kg of fish/ha and year, which means a total of 40-50 tons of fish/year. The water quality is good, with a large flow from Vättern via Motala stream. Boren is part of Göta canal and Motala stream and all water that flows out of Vättern flows into Boren. Boren is part of Göta canal, and Motala stream also flows through the lake.
