Alpine bullhead ("Bergsimpa") Overview

Alpine bullhead - Cottus poecilopus

Part of a family bullheads. Live in freshwater, but can go into the brackish water.

Bergsimpan has a strong head with a large, meaty mouth and tapering body colored in gray-brown with darker spots. It has two dorsal fins, of which the back is longer.


Areas around the Baltic Sea with low salinity, as the inner parts of the Gulf of Finland and the northernmost Gulf of Bothnia. Bergsimpan is a bottom fish prefer shallow waters with good visibility.

Size and growth

Bergsimpan are egg-laying and playing in late winter to spring. Length up to 10.6 cm.
