Brook trout ("Bäckröding") Overview

Brook trout - Salvelinus fontinalis

Brook char thrives best in cold, oxygen-rich streams and smaller creeks.
Has a marbled or flame-spotted back, otherwise it has the usual char characteristics such as white fin edges.
It eats everything from fish, worms and insects.

Population

The species was introduced to Sweden and Europe in the late 19th century. Unlike, for example, the mountain char, the brook char also thrives well in the southern parts of Sweden, the water can be a little warmer provided that the oxygen content is high.

Size and growth

At 2 to 4 years of age, brook char usually becomes mature for spawning.
It spawns in the fall and then seeks out running/flowing watercourses with gravel bottoms.

It usually grows rapidly, but rarely exceeds one kilo. Lifespan: Approx. 5 years.

Record size

Swedish record: 2.6 kg.
