Sandbäckstjärn was previously a so-called put and take water where ready-to-catch rainbow trout were regularly planted . As of 2023-08-07, the pond has returned to being a natural water and only sporadic releases are carried out, see special information regarding the fish below. The pond is easily accessible from the western side where there is a footpath and the ground is firm. The eastern side consists of rock gardens and swamp forest and here boots or waders are needed to walk dry-shod. A few places are more easily accessible and there is also a fishing platform on this side. Clearing is carried out regularly to facilitate sport fishing. There are disabled-accessible piers next to the parking lot at the southern end of the lake. Barbecue areas are located by the pond and they, like the piers, are managed by Karlstad Municipality. Sport fishing is managed by the Sportfiskarna regional office in Karlstad. In Sandbäckstjärn, in addition to occasional rainbow trout, there are also pike, tench, rudd and roach in the lake. The maximum depth is about 2.5 meters.
Sandbäckstjärn is open all year round and we only sell day passes for fishing. Day passes are personal and valid between 00.00 and 24.00 .
Groups and companies can rent the pond for fishing events and rainbow trout can be released on request. On these occasions, other ticket sales are closed. Contact us for more information.
Special information regarding the fish in Sandbäckstjärn
Sandbäckstjärn is a water where pike, roach, tench and rudd are naturally found and where ready-to-catch rainbow salmon were previously planted out at regular intervals. The pond is located adjacent to the rescue services and their training area in Karlstad. For many years, a substance called PFAS has been used in the extinguishing agent used. This substance has contaminated the ground adjacent to the pond and also leaked into the water. The EU recently introduced stricter limit values for this substance and in fish caught for consumption the new limit value is currently 8 nanograms/g of fish meat. In the spring of 2023, rainbow salmon that had spent at least 6 months in the pond were sampled and 3.8-11ng/g was measured in these fish with an average value of 7.9ng/g. This has led Karlstad Municipality to issue dietary advice for fish caught in Sandbäckstjärn from 17/5 2023 and that a maximum of 1-3 portions/year of rainbow salmon from the pond should be eaten. Fish that are born and raised in the pond should not be consumed at all. The anglers still want to inform about this dietary recommendation so that all participants and guardians can make their own well-considered decision regarding their own consumption.

Due to these dietary recommendations, Sportfiskarna has chosen to end its regular put&take operations in Sandbäckstjärn from mid-July 2023.
