Zander ("Gös") Overview

Zander - Sander lucioperca

The zander thrive in slightly larger and muddy lakes and brackvattensskärgårdar, as well as in low-flowing streams. Muddy, shallow and warm pikeperch is ideal, since it is a water-loving fish. It hunts in part by using sight, where it is cloudy and dark night water could "sneak" up on prey fish. It does this with the help of his excellent vision, where it has light reinforcing layers of the eyes.

During the summer, the most active at night and during other seasons at dusk. As a young man living zander fry and crustaceans and adult alone fish. The game takes place in April-June on muddy, sandy, gravelly or rocky bottoms with vegetation of one to three meters deep. Play takes place even in low running water. The eggs are placed in shallow lekgropar where they stick to the substrate. They guarded few days by the male. In coastal waters and larger lakes hike zander usually only short distances (most over a mil), but hikes of over 10 mil occurred.

Goshen scientific name is Sander lucioperca. This means gäddabborre, which also is a direct translation of pike-English name.

The zander is closely related to the perch, which can easily imagine when looking at the fins and their tags. A small and too close relative is Gers. The zander is very large and pointed teeth, and muted colors.

The zander commonly found in Vänern, Hjälmaren and Mälaren water. In the Baltic Sea are the main at the coast of Uppland, in parts of the Stockholm archipelago and in Bråviken. It occurs, however, in the archipelago of northern Småland Norrbotten. Overall, pikeperch natural environment lowland greater nutrient-rich waters. When zander increases in the water, often reduces the amount of perch, zander then both eat smaller perch, and competes with it for food. Sometimes even the pike decrease in number. Zander has planted in very many places to create better fishing, both for sport fishing and commercial fishing. There are a couple gösodlingar in Sweden.

In many waters has been a ban on fishing on zander on the game, especially the males can be a little too easily caught when they steadfastly guarding the rum. Likewise, it is fine with a minimum size of 40-45 cm, so that the zander at least have time to reproduce once before being caught.

Size and growth

The male sexual mature at 2-4 years of age, while the female sex mature at 3-5 years of age.

Zander requires quite a lot of heat and long summers to be successful at the game. Otherwise fal fry risk of starving to death first winter. Good growth in the first summer is therefore a prerequisite. A gösunge will gladly over 10 cm first summer. Thanks to its appetite may early summer move to smaller, but even old abborrungar as food. For these reasons, it is common to see only walleye by certain size classes, from the years when the play and survival has been good. They have thus naturally, a rather rhapsodic spawning success
