The home of the large brown trout in the wilderness.
Welcome to one of the country's few flowing rivers with long-migrating wild brown trout.
Dammån in Jämtland is a complete fishing area with lake, stream, pond and mountain fishing, a fishing route in untouched wilderness.
Dammån has its headwaters up at the Norwegian border and the Anaris Mountains.
Every year, between 1200 trout pass the fish ladder in Ågårdarna, but hundreds of trout are caught below the control and are not included in the count.
1982 was a record year, with 1024 trout counted.
The maximum weights are between 6-8kg, while the average weight is just under 2kg.
As early as May, the trout begin their spawning migration from Storsjön.
Spawning takes place in late September and early October.
Dammån's fishery conservation work
To ensure the regrowth of the long-migratory wild trout, the fisheries management area is investing in the release of two-summer trout fry.
Breeding fish are caught with a land seine in Dammån at Höglekardalen.
The fertilized roe is then placed in fish farms for hatching and rearing.
The fisheries conservation work also includes biotope conservation measures in Dammån, control of pike and mink, as well as a ban on fishing with worms and a substantial investment in fisheries supervision.
Sport fishing in Dammån is mainly aimed at trout and grayling.
Occasional trout and whitefish can migrate up from Storsjön to the lower part of Dammån.
A dry aquarium that shows the biological life of trout in Dammån has been available to visit at the fish ladder since the summer of 1994.
