Burbot ("Lake") Overview


Burbot - Lota lota

The lake is long and has a flat head. It has two dorsal fins.
Even though it is a cod fish, it lives in fresh water and brackish salt water.
The lake thrives best in cold and oxygen-rich waters. It often lives near the bottom in deep water.

Population

Widespread in the northern hemisphere.
Missing for some reason in Bohuslän, otherwise found all over Sweden.

Size and growth

The lake usually amounts to 35-70 cm but can in some cases exceed 80 cm.
Lifespan: At least 11 years.

Record size

Swedish angling record is about 8.50 kg.

Fishing tips

The lake is a cold-water fish that prefers to live on a soft clay bottom in deep water.
